Avi decided to make a change and is slowly transitioning to a new facility and home outside of Fort Bragg in Mendocino.
Things are changing a bit, at least for this transition period.
For now, here's the story. The 2020 wines are still Poor Ranch fruit, done in shaved out barrique and punch-ins like usual. However, there's only magnums for this vintage. It's a special year deserving of special treatment for a number of reasons. To start, as a result of the fires in 2021, there will be no red wine for the whole vintage. Everything was vinified as rosé, so these are the last reds from Avi we'll have for a year or so.
Next, this is the last vintage from the old facility, and certainly the end of an era in terms of production. Avi's got big plans for the next chapter of Absentee (including white wines!), so it's very likely this vintage will be the last of its kind. Finally and certainly, the wines are tasting so, so good. The news from California is that these are the best yet, so they have been bottled for those who love to drink with gusto.
